A new sole plate fitted to this 16th century sable block.

16th Century stable block, Yaxley

New sole plate fitted to a 16th century stable block.

The original structure had deteriorated in certain areas, with the far corner completely absent due to it being bricked up with soft red bricks and cement, resulting in mortar that was harder than the bricks themselves. All of this was removed to restore the original framework.

A new English green oak sole plate was crafted, jointed using a tenoned half lap and secured with two 3/4" air-dried oak pegs with a 3mm draw bore offset. The new studs have been installed in the same locations as the original ones, morticed and tenoned to the sole plate, as was the case with the original sole plate. The tops have been fastened using handcrafted 3" rose head nails.

All the new green oak we install is finished with a scrub plane finish, which removes the modern sawn appearance and provides a superior finish with much more character than a machine-planed finish. This scrub plane finish allows the new wood to blend seamlessly with the older timbers.
