All of our joints are morticed and tenoned the traditional way, scribed using a plumb bob and then pegged together using air dried oak pegs, every joint is draw bored with a 3mm offset. By using air dried pegs this means that when the peg starts to dry out the peg won't just fall out, the joints will only get tighter as the green oak dries out and shrink.
Every frame is laid out and dry fitted flat in every elevation to make sure all joints fit perfectly, this is helped by the use of our steel 'T' pins (podging pins). These are steel tapered pins shaped like a 'T' which mimic the oak pegs. These help us when assembling the frame in the workshop and makes raising the frame on site much safer and easier. Once the frame is up these can be removed and exchanged with an oak peg.
While the frame is laid up it can then be numbered with carpenters marks, these are different to roman numerals. All of the numbering is done on the external face of the frame. This is the face that is always facing up when the frame is being made. Each long wall has its own numbering system, one side is single numbers such as III (3) and the other is usually the tag side such as III\ (3tag). For cross frames, these define where the bays are, these are usually marked with XF and numbered for which cross frame it is such as XFIII (cross frame 3).
