Lime render on to clay block.

Clay block lime render, Mendlesham

Clay Block Lime Render

The existing cement-based render failed due to water ingress. This issue arose because the moisture trapped in the cement render had no escape route, leading to the corrosion and expansion of the metal render mesh. As a result, the cement render cracked, allowing more water to penetrate the building and accelerating its deterioration.

All of the cement-based render was removed. Above the pentice board, sawn laths were present; these were retained where possible, and new were installed as necessary.

The clay blocks were consolidated where needed with a chalk-based lime render. Additionally, a glass fibre render mesh was installed due to the building's proximity to the road, which causes additional vibration from traffic and increased moisture.

The building was lime rendered with two coats. The first was a chalk-based insulating lime plaster, into which the render mesh was embedded. The top coat was also a chalk-based fine lime render.
